New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy is facing backlash over comments that suggested he had offered shelter to an undocumented migrant at his home. The controversy erupted after Murphy spoke at a progressive forum, where he jokingly mentioned housing an immigrant in his garage apartment and challenged federal authorities to intervene.

The remarks quickly drew criticism from conservative figures and former immigration officials, who accused the governor of potentially violating federal immigration law. While Murphy’s team insists that his words were taken out of context, the situation has ignited a larger political debate over immigration policy and the role of public officials in protecting undocumented individuals.

What did Governor Phil Murphy say?

During a recent speaking event, Governor Murphy stated that he and his wife had considered housing a woman with unresolved immigration status. He was quoted as saying:

"Let's have her live at our house above our garage, and good luck to the feds coming in to try to get her."

While some saw the statement as symbolic, others interpreted it as an admission of harboring an undocumented migrant, sparking calls for a federal investigation.

Republican backlash and legal concerns

Following Murphy’s remarks, several Republican figures and former Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials condemned his comments.

  • Tom Homan, former acting director of ICE, stated that knowingly harboring an undocumented immigrant could be a violation of federal law, specifically Title 8, United States Code 1324.
  • Homan also suggested that if Murphy’s statements were true, legal action should be pursued against him.
  • Several GOP lawmakers and conservative commentators seized on the remarks, accusing Murphy of undermining immigration enforcement and violating federal statutes.

Homan and other critics argue that Murphy’s comments, whether serious or not, set a dangerous precedent and warrant further legal scrutiny.

Murphy’s immigration stance and its broader impact

Governor Murphy has been a vocal advocate for immigrant protections, implementing policies that limit cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities in New Jersey.

His progressive stance on immigration has made him a target for conservatives, and this latest controversy has added fuel to the political fire surrounding immigration policies under the Biden and Trump administrations.

  • Murphy has previously supported policies that protect DACA recipients and limit ICE detentions in the state.
  • New Jersey has implemented guidelines that restrict how state and local law enforcement interact with ICE, a move that has drawn both praise and criticism.
  • The debate over state versus federal jurisdiction in immigration enforcement continues to be a contentious issue, with Murphy’s recent remarks placing him at the center of a larger national conversation.
