Key penalties for driving without a license under HB 1589

According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), the HB 1589 law imposes harsher penalties for those who violate driving rules, especially for those without a valid driver's license.

  • First offense: Second-degree misdemeanor, with a fine of up to $500 and up to 60 days in jail.
  • Second offense: First-degree misdemeanor, with a fine of up to $1,000 and up to one year in jail.
  • Third offense or more: First-degree misdemeanor, with at least 10 mandatory days in jail, in addition to a fine of up to $1,000.
  • Driving with a revoked license (DWLSR): Possible felony if there is a repeat offense.
  • Vehicle confiscation: The vehicle may be impounded and only returned after the payment of fines.

Requirements for obtaining a driver's license under HB 1589

According to FLHSMV, the HB 1589 law requires that all drivers have a valid driver's license issued by the state, meeting all legal requirements to operate a vehicle in Florida.
