Amtrak accident in Boston kills three family members
On Thursday night, an Amtrak train traveling from Boston to Richmond, Virginia, fatally struck three family members who were on the tracks in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The incident, which occurred near Prospect and Beaver Streets in Bristol Township, prompted a joint investigation.
According to NBC News, the accident took place around 6:10 p.m. on April 3. One of the police officers heading toward the individuals on the tracks was approaching them when the train collided with the family members.
Joe Moors, Chief of the Bristol Borough Police Department, said, “When our sergeant was approaching the individuals on the tracks, a high-speed train traveling south toward Philadelphia hit the three people who were on the tracks.”
Fox News reported that police had received reports of people walking on the tracks shortly before the incident. Authorities confirmed to the outlet that the three victims, all adults, were family members. “It appeared the victims heard the train, but they couldn’t move off the tracks in time,” officials told Fox News.
The tragic incident temporarily halted Amtrak service between New York and Philadelphia, which also affected SEPTA regional train operations. SEPTA posted on social media, stating, “Service is suspended until further notice due to a fatal incident near the Bristol station.”
Amtrak issued an official apology, stating, “We regret the inconvenience and will provide updates as more information becomes available. We appreciate your patience.” Train services resumed around 11:00 p.m. Thursday, according to Fox News.
The collision, involving a train with 236 passengers and crew on board, did not result in any injuries to those aboard the train, according to NBC News. No officers were injured in the incident either. Amtrak stated that they are cooperating with the Bristol Police Department in the investigation.
The same county saw a similar incident the day before, on Wednesday.
