Policies and Standards

Who We Are

Grupo La República is a media company that publishes newspapers, operates their respective websites and social media platforms, offers internet television, and produces various editorial and marketing products.

Vision

To be the most influential editorial group in the country, transmitting our values, reaffirming our commitment to service, and venturing into innovative business areas.

Mission

To publish content with a truthful and committed approach, adding value to the community and our employees through an institutionalized organization.

Ethical Principles

Our values help us identify what we want to be and do. They are the foundation of our credibility and guide our conduct in the workplace with our colleagues, as well as how the audience recognizes us as part of the La República family.

  • Integrity: Acting with respect, honesty, and commitment.
  • Respect: Recognizing, appreciating, and valuing both myself and others, as well as my environment.
  • Truthfulness: The ability to always tell the truth, be sincere, frank, and act in good faith—not only in daily matters but also in relationships with others.

Additionally, parameters must be set regarding the behavior of La República's members in relation to the audience and advertisers. "Audiences" refers to the group of people who receive news through any of our media channels (print, digital, TV)—in other words, our public.

On the other hand, an advertiser is any person or company that places an advertisement in any of our media outlets.

  • The main function of La República's staff, especially in the journalistic area, is to inform the audience. To do so, they must gather news facts as they happened. Only in the case of opinion pieces are authors allowed to provide their personal views and/or columns.
  • The news and opinions provided by our journalists and collaborators/columnists must be properly verified. The aim is to avoid complaints from individuals mentioned in those articles or opinions, preventing them from affecting the credibility of the media and the GLRP company.
  • Journalistic staff must not make unauthorized mentions or advertisements that have not been coordinated with the Commercial department under the format of a journalistic piece.

To maintain neutrality in handling information, the media guarantees an independent stance, without allegiance to political parties. Furthermore, it ensures its journalists' commitment to the responsible management of the information they work with, free from bias or preferences of any kind.

The basis for nonpartisan work is the application of the same criteria in each article, using the same methodology. This means that any information, regardless of its source, is subjected to the same scrutiny to reach valid conclusions.

This standard is also applied when seeking sources, particularly interviewees, to ensure that, before being consulted, their political affiliations are verified to avoid potentially biased statements.

Once the text is written, it undergoes a series of filters (coordinator, editorial desk, and style correction) to ensure that the information is not unduly biased.

Finally, any published piece is open to challenge by any reader who believes the aforementioned principle of neutrality has been violated. Following a claim, the article will be reviewed, and if necessary, corrections will be made, with proper notification of any changes to the text.

Data Review and Verification

Every journalist at La República is required to verify the information they receive. Gathering data, seeking additional information, collecting all perspectives, and presenting the facts in a factual manner are processes that must be part of every writer's daily routine in order to deliver high-quality, well-contextualized material to readers.

Interpretation is not allowed in news reports. At La República's editorial office, we understand that including an opinion could lead to a distortion of the fact being reported.

To ensure that journalists do not skip any of these requirements, all of our content undergoes up to three filters (proofreaders, coordinators, and the editorial desk), where we ensure that what is published meets the journalistic standards mentioned above—a demand consistent with a media outlet of our magnitude.

If any of the verification steps cannot be fulfilled, we choose not to publish the piece until we are fully certain that the data presented in the text is completely corroborated.

At the same time, our publications comply with the standards of Verificador, an initiative by the La República group to combat misinformation on the internet, and a certified member of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN). As a media outlet committed to fighting this issue, it is our duty to meet these standards.

If a piece needs to be updated, the writer must review all of its elements (headline, subheadings, text, links) to detect any outdated information.

In other words, updating a piece involves not only changing the headline or the time but also any sensitive informational elements that require modification. The writer is obligated to consider them when performing the procedure.

These changes are monitored by the previously mentioned filters (proofreader, coordinator, editor) to ensure compliance with the requirements and prevent the circulation of imprecise or outdated information.

Source Management

Proper handling of journalistic sources is essential to ensure the credibility and quality of the information published on a news website. Journalists must verify the authenticity of sources, ensuring they are reliable, relevant, and well-informed on the topic at hand. It is crucial to prioritize the use of official sources, such as government websites, social media accounts, international organizations, and authorized spokespersons, as they tend to provide verified and updated information. Additionally, diversifying sources contributes to a balanced perspective and helps avoid informational biases.

The use of open sources and social media should be handled with caution and always complemented by independent verification. By prioritizing official sources and maintaining high standards in information management, audience trust is strengthened, and the commitment to ethical and rigorous journalism is reinforced.

Unidentified Sources

Every piece of reporting should be backed by reliable sources. However, the decision of those who, in good faith, provide information to our journalists and, being in a vulnerable situation, choose to remain anonymous to avoid potential reactions or reprisals, will be respected.

In such cases, the journalist has a few options: seek additional sources that reinforce the information being worked on and can be identified, or negotiate with the original source to provide more precise context to the reader (for example, mentioning the department or circle they belong to), even if partially, to strengthen the credibility of the information.
