Around 3:44 a.m, the fire department received the call and 8 minutes later, they found "a large amount of fire" coming from the building. According to Union Fire Chief Steve Pinch, the damage the building suffered was severe, "I would think they'd probably have to take the building down and start over."
It took approximately 35 firefighters on scene, after the wind that initially fueled the fire died down, to have the fire under control.
What caused the Matunuck Oyster Bar fire?
While there was no one injured, an investigation is still proceeding as is standard protocol. Restaurant owner Perry Raso stated that the restaurant was open the night before, and he was still present at the scene during the fire response, along with Pinch and other firefighters, at 8 a.m.
"We feel bad for all the employees, and everyone affected by this fire," Pinch said. "It's heartbreaking."
