Lay’s Classic Potato Chips, one of the most popular snack brands in the U.S., is under recall due to a serious labeling issue that poses a significant health risk to individuals with milk allergies. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified this recall as Class I, its highest risk level, which indicates that consumption could result in severe health consequences or even death.

The recall, initiated by Frito-Lay in December 2024, affects specific batches of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips distributed in select regions. Here’s everything you need to know about the recall, its implications, and what consumers should do.

Why are Lay’s Potato Chips being recalled by FDA?

In December 2024, Frito-Lay, the manufacturer of Lay’s chips, voluntarily recalled specific 13-ounce bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips after a consumer complaint revealed the presence of milk, which was not listed on the packaging.

The affected chips were distributed in Oregon and Washington, with bags marked with a "Guaranteed Fresh" date of February 11, 2025, and specific manufacturing codes: “6462307xx” or “6463307xx.”. This oversight has brought attention to the importance of accurate allergen labeling, as milk is one of the FDA’s primary allergens requiring clear disclosure.

FDA’s Classification: Why this recall is high risk

The FDA’s Class I recall designation emphasizes the severity of the situation. This level is reserved for products that could cause serious adverse health consequences or even death if consumed.

For individuals with milk allergies, exposure can lead to symptoms ranging from mild skin reactions to severe respiratory distress or anaphylaxis. The FDA’s warning underscores the urgency for consumers with sensitivities to avoid these products entirely.

While no allergic reactions have been reported so far, the potential for harm remains significant, making this recall a critical public health matter.

What consumers should do with Lay’s Potato Chips

The recall of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips has sparked concerns among consumers, particularly those who rely on accurate allergen labeling for their safety. While individuals without milk allergies can consume the product without issue, those with allergies must exercise caution.

Consumers who purchased the affected chips are advised to immediately dispose of them or return them to the retailer for a refund. Frito-Lay has also made its Consumer Relations department available for questions and assistance, reinforcing their commitment to addressing the situation transparently.

This recall also serves as a reminder for manufacturers to implement stringent quality control measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
