Daylight saving time (DST) will begin, pushing the time transition from day to night more than four months after it ended in November. While the biannual time change has been in practice since DST was first adopted in 1918, many Americans have expressed frustration with the constant shifts. Lawmakers have been working to end these time changes, either by making DST permanent or completely abolishing it.

Before taking office, President Donald Trump suggested in December that he wanted to end DST and keep standard time year-round. "The Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn’t!" Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on December 13. "Daylight Saving Time is inconvenient, and very costly to our nation."

When does Daylight Saving Time start in California?

DST will begin on Sunday, March 9 in most of the U.S. territory.

Which states do not observe Daylight Saving Time?

Arizona and Hawaii do not observe DST, along with U.S. territories like Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Marianas.

Why America still have Daylight Saving Time?

Although many believe DST was introduced to provide farmers with extra daylight, the reality is different. Farmers were actually opposed to DST in 1919, just a year after it was implemented during World War I.

As History.com explains, farmers didn’t rely on clocks—they followed the sun’s schedule. This made DST disruptive, as farmers had to wait an extra hour for dew to evaporate, hired hands worked less, and cows were not ready to be milked an hour earlier to meet shipping schedules.

While DST was repealed in 1919, some states and cities continued observing it until the Uniform Time Act was passed in 1966, which standardized time zones across the country.

Has Trump passed legislation on Daylight Saving Time?

As of Wednesday, Trump has not passed any executive orders to end DST permanently. USA TODAY reached out to the White House for comments on the matter.
