The closure comes as part of a liquidation of assets, marking the end of an era for the beloved local sporting goods retailer.
Jax Ames Outdoor Gear store announces closure after 70 years
The store was originally opened in 1955 with the name Ames Surplus, by Marvin and Lola Quinlan. When they started, it was a small military surplus shop, rather than a sporting goods store, and it eventually evolved into a well-known retailer.
Jax Ames, which occupies over 21,000 square feet across 2 buildings, announced on May 13 the closure with a post on its Facebook page.
Why are local stores closing?
While the store did not give any reason for the closing, they have asked their clients to stay tuned for details about the upcoming liquidation.
Sadly, Jax Ames is not the only store who has been facing trouble to stay afloat. Local and regional stores have their biggest rival in e-commerce offers, as they offer many options without the struggles of a physical store.
