Seven individuals from Chile are now facing criminal charges for a series of thefts at the homes of Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and other high-profile athletes. According to authorities, these suspects are supposedly members of a "South American Theft Group".

On Tuesday, Feb. 18, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Middle District Florida claimed in a statement that the seven men identified as Sergio Ortega Cabello, 38, Bastian Jimenez Freraut, 27, Pablo Zuniga Cartes, 24, Alexander Huiaguil Chavez, 24, Bastian Orellano Morales, 23, Jordan Quiroga Sanchez, 22, and Ignacio Zuniga Cartes, 20, are being charged with conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property.

Who are these seven suspects and how they stole The Kansas City Chiefs stars?

In the criminal complaint unsealed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, it is mentioned that the Chilean men are allegedly part of a gang that targeted famous athletes in the National Football League (NFL) and National Basketball League (NBA). It was also stated that this group robbed the athletes’ mansions while they were “away or at important games” often listed online. It is estimated that the seven suspects stole around $2 million worth of valuables.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) also noted in the statement that the burglars would “divide out responsibilities” among its members regarding the thefts. For example, renting vehicles, obtaining hotels or short-stay rentals, acquiring fraudulent identification as well as contacting buyers of the stolen goods. Uncovering the group was possible due to search warrants, subpoenaed information and other pieces of evidence.

Connection between the burglaries at Travis Kelce’s and Patrick Mahomes’ mansions

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office and police reports, Mahomes’ and Kelce’s homes were robbed with only 48 hours of difference from one another, back in October 2024. On one hand, Mahomes’ eight-acre in Belton, Missouri was broken into around midnight on Saturday, Oct. 5. The police report stated there weren’t any signs of forced entry.

On the other hand, a break-in Kelce’s 17,000-square-foot home in Leawood, Kansas was reported on Monday Oct. 7, less than 48 hours apart from the previous burglary. This happened during a game at Arrowhead Stadium, where the Kansas City Chiefs were playing against the New Orleans Saints. The police report of the following day mentioned that the rear door was broken and approximately $20,000 were stolen.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office stated that the theft group robbed “jewelry, watches, cash and other luxury items” in both mansions. Authorities shared a picture of the alleged burglars posing with the stolen items. The complaint also claimed that other players’ homes were also burglarized in 2024, which only reinforces the theory of a theft gang that targets high-profile athletes.
