New York State has launched its highly secure Mobile ID (MiD), offering residents the convenience of carrying their driver’s license, learner permit, or non-driver ID digitally on their smartphones. With over 200,000 New Yorkers already enrolled, this new digital identification method is gaining momentum due to its simplicity and enhanced privacy features.

Governor Kathy Hochul celebrated the milestone, noting the convenience it offers for everyday use, from fast airport security screenings to seamless age verification at businesses. The Mobile ID app, available for both Android and iOS devices, is helping residents verify their identity securely, contactlessly, and more privately than ever before.

What is the New York mobile ID and what does it offer?

The New York app is a tech-based version of your official government documents, securely stored on your smartphone. According to Governor Kathy Hochul, the softward offers “secure, contactless identification” right from your phone, providing a convenient and privacy-focused alternative to traditional physical IDs. It is accepted at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints in over 100 airports and can be used for age verification at participating bars and restaurants across the state.

Mark J.F. Schroeder, Commissioner of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, emphasized the growing importance of computerized IDs, noting that “Mobile IDs will become increasingly important for consumers and businesses alike as more interactions go digital.” This technology is designed with strong protection measures to protect user privacy and ensure safe transactions, making it an essential tool in today’s virtual world.

How to get the New York mobile ID?

Obtaining the New York Mobile ID is easy and can be done in a few simple steps. First, download the app from the official website or store, then register your phone number to link it with your device.

Follow these simple steps to get your New York Mobile ID:
