On March 18, 2025, the Trump administration released approximately 80,000 pages of previously classified documents related to the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy. This significant release aims to provide greater transparency and potentially shed new light on the events surrounding the assassination.

Declassified files reveal international intelligence concerns and Oswald conspiracy theories

Included in the release are detailed communications between the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) and the CIA, highlighting international concerns and intelligence sharing during that period. One notable document is a 1968 memo advising against declassifying a specific Warren Commission document, CD-971, which referred to anonymous phone calls made to the Canberra Embassy.

Despite the volume of information, experts do not anticipate significant changes to the established narrative that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in the assassination. The documents contain memos and references to various conspiracy theories, including suggestions that Oswald left the Soviet Union in 1962 with intentions to kill Kennedy. However, no conclusive evidence linking Oswald to any intelligence agency has been found in these files.

Trump's executive order pushes for transparency in JFK assassination records

This release follows President Trump's executive Order 14176, signed on January 23, 2025, which mandated the declassification of records concerning the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The order reflects a commitment to transparency and aims to address longstanding public interest in these historical events.

While the newly released documents offer additional context and details, historians remain cautious about uncovering groundbreaking revelations. The files are expected to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the era's intelligence operations and geopolitical climate, enriching the historical narrative without drastically altering the known facts surrounding President Kennedy's assassination.
