In the early hours of Sunday, April 13, 2025, an arsonist set fire to the Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence in Harrisburg while Governor Josh Shapiro and his family were present. The fire occurred shortly after the family had celebrated the first night of Passover. Fortunately, no one was injured, as the family was located in a different part of the residence at the time and was safely evacuated by Pennsylvania State Police with assistance from Capitol Police. The Harrisburg Bureau of Fire promptly responded and extinguished the fire. ​

Authorities have confirmed the incident as arson, although detailed causes have yet to be disclosed. The fire inflicted significant damage to part of the residence. The Harrisburg Bureau of Fire responded to extinguish the fire, and the Pennsylvania State Police are now leading a multiagency investigation into the act. ​

The fire caused visible damage, particularly to a large entertaining room on the south side of the mansion. Firefighters from the Harrisburg Bureau of Fire managed to extinguish the blaze without any reported injuries. The governor, a potential 2028 Democratic presidential contender, expressed gratitude for the safety of his family. The Pennsylvania State Police are leading the investigation and have offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. The mansion, located on the riverfront and built in the 1960s, remains under police surveillance as investigations continue. ​

Governor Shapiro praises swift emergency response as arson probe intensifies at Pennsylvania residence

Governor Shapiro, a Democrat, has served in office since 2023. Capitol Police and Pennsylvania State Police jointly assisted in the evacuation. The swift coordination between agencies ensured the safety of all individuals inside the residence. Authorities have since increased security measures around the property as the investigation continues.

Governor Shapiro expressed gratitude for the first responders who ensured his family's safety. Shapiro, a Democrat, has served as Governor since January 2023 and previously held roles as Montgomery County commissioner and state representative.
