Pope Francis passed away on April 21, 2025, at 7:35 a.m. in his Vatican residence, Domus Santa Marta, due to a cerebral stroke, coma, and irreversible cardiovascular collapse. The official death certificate, signed by Andrea Arcangeli, Director of the Vatican's Health and Hygiene Department, confirmed these causes. Prior to his death, Francis had suffered from acute respiratory failure, bilateral pneumonia, multiple bronchiectasis, hypertension, and type II diabetes. His condition had been deteriorating despite medical efforts. The Vatican made the official announcement shortly after confirming his passing.

The 88-year-old pontiff had been discharged nearly a month earlier after a five-week hospitalization for double pneumonia. In his final will, Pope Francis expressed his desire to be buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, opting for a simple grave without elaborate decorations. This choice deviates from the tradition of burying popes in St. Peter's Basilica. His decision was rooted in personal devotion rather than ceremonial expectations. The Church respected his wishes and began preparations accordingly.

Pope Francis chose Santa Maria Maggiore for his burial, honoring his Marian devotion

His testament, dated June 29, 2022, specified that his tomb should be prepared in the side nave between the Pauline Chapel and the Sforza Chapel, marked only with the inscription "Franciscus." The document was made public following his death and the issuance of the death certificate. Francis's passing marked the end of a significant era in the Catholic Church. He was widely regarded as a reformer and advocate for the poor. His legacy will influence the direction of the Church for years to come.

In his will, Pope Francis emphasized his lifelong devotion to the Virgin Mary, requesting that his remains rest in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where he often prayed before and after apostolic journeys. He expressed hope that his final earthly journey would conclude in this ancient Marian sanctuary. The basilica held deep spiritual significance for him. It symbolized maternal care and divine protection. His personal connection to the site shaped his burial choice.

Pope Francis' humble burial plans and final message of peace and unity

The Pope also indicated that the expenses for his burial preparations would be covered by a benefactor's donation, entrusted to Santa Maria Maggiore, with instructions provided to Monsignor Rolandas Makrickas, the extraordinary commissioner of the Liberian Chapter. This act reflects his commitment to humility and simplicity. He wished to avoid lavish ceremonies or unnecessary expenditures. His instructions highlighted a consistent message of modesty. Every detail of his burial mirrored his pastoral approach.

Concluding his testament, Francis offered his final sufferings for world peace and fraternity among peoples. He prayed that the Lord would reward those who loved him and continued to pray for him, leaving a legacy of compassion and dedication to the marginalized. His final message emphasized unity and mercy. Even in death, he sought to serve others through example. The world now mourns a pope who lived with humility and hope.
