Bolsonaro might face 40 years in prison after receiving coup-related summons in hospital
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro reacted angrily after receiving a judicial summons while in the hospital. He faces serious charges of attempting to overturn the 2022 election results.

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro remains in the ICU after undergoing intestinal surgery ten days ago. However, on Wednesday, while connected to several medical devices, he received a visit from a judicial officer.
The official handed him a summons related to his alleged involvement in a coup attempt following the 2022 presidential election.

These news enraged the former Brazilian president, as he is currently in the hospital, questioning the judicial officer about the timing of the visit: "Are you aware that you are in an intensive care unit?"
Things did not seem to get better for Bolsonaro, as he realized he only had 5 days to present an appropriate defense. "I have 5 days to present my defense? Five days?" If convicted, Bolsonaro could face up to 40 years in prison.
Why is Bolsonaro being accused of a coup attempt?
Jair Bolsonaro is currently under investigation, as well as his allies, for leading a coup attempt to overturn the 2022 Brazilian election results after he was defeated. According to the prosecutor's office, the plan involved preventing Lula da Silva, from taking office; and even issuing a decree to declare a state of emergency and inciting the military to intervene in the democratic process.

Additionally, Bolsonaro has also been linked to the January 8, 2023, attacks, when his supporters invade and vandalized government buildings in Brasília. Furthermore, the prosecutor's office has also stated that Bolsonaro knew about a plan named "Punhal Verde y Amarelo" where it was intended the murder of Lula da Silva, his vice president, Geraldo Alckmin and Supreme Federal Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes.
