Canada's newly re-elected Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has taken a firm position on U.S.-Canada relations, declaring that Canada will never succumb to President Donald Trump's threats of annexation or harmful tariffs.

Donald Trump's tariffs played a key role in Canadian elections. However, Mark Carney, leader of the Canadian Liberal Party, won the elections despite this kind of political climate. Throughout the entire duration of his campaign; Carney has been outspoken about his low opinion about Trump's tariffs, including the imposition of tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
“We are over the shock of the American betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons. We have to look out for ourselves. And above all, we have to take care of each other,” Carney said. Trump and his supporters' comments regarding Canada becoming the "51st state", have also hurt U.S.-Canada relations.

Canada's economy amid tariffs and trade war
As Carney’s first term was marked by a focus on economic stability, this second time he plans to elevate Canada's economy while reducing its reliance on the U.S. market. He has firmly stated that Canada's path to follow is to diversify its trade relations.
Carney also stated in his victory speech that when he does sit down with Trump “it will be to discuss the future economic and security relationship between two sovereign nations, and it will be with the full knowledge that we have many, many other options than the US to build prosperity for all Canadians,” he said.
