U.S. Olympic sprinter Fred Kerley was arrested on May 1, 2025, in Dania Beach, Florida, for misdemeanor battery after allegedly striking his ex-girlfriend, Olympic hurdler Alaysha Johnson. The incident occurred during a dispute at a hotel ahead of a track meet. According to the police report, Johnson claimed that Kerley hit her in the face, causing a nosebleed, and police confirmed her injuries were consistent with her account. Kerley was booked at Broward County Jail with a $1,000 bond.

As a result of the arrest, Kerley was removed from the upcoming Grand Slam Track event in Miami, where he was scheduled to compete in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. The event organizers stated that the matter is under active investigation and directed inquiries to the Broward County Sheriff's Office.

Kerley's attorney, Richard L. Cooper, expressed confidence that the case lacks merit and will be dismissed. He stated that Kerley looks forward to returning to competition and inspiring young athletes.

This incident follows two prior legal issues involving Kerley. In January 2025, he was arrested in Miami Beach after a confrontation with police, during which he was tased and charged with battery on an officer, resisting without violence, and disorderly conduct. Additionally, in 2024, he faced a domestic battery charge, to which he pleaded not guilty.

Kerley, 29, is a two-time Olympic medalist, having won a silver medal in the 100-meter dash at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and a bronze medal in the same event at the 2024 Paris Games. He has also achieved success at the World Championships, including a gold medal in the 100-meter sprint in 2022.
