Newark Airport faces third technical outage, FAA confirms delays amid aging infrastructure

A telecommunications failure at Newark Airport triggered widespread delays, but federal officials say it’s just the tip of the iceberg. With outdated infrastructure and a staffing crisis, the FAA is launching an ambitious plan to modernize the skies—before the system crashes for good.

Newark Liberty International Airport experienced its third major equipment outage in recent weeks, leading to a 45-minute ground stop. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed a telecommunications issue at Philadelphia TRACON Area C, which manages Newark's airspace, causing radar screens to go dark. Operations resumed shortly after redundancies were verified.

This incident follows previous outages, including a 90-second radar blackout on May 9 and a severe radar and radio outage on April 28 that led to over 1,000 flight cancellations. The recurring technical failures have raised concerns about the aging infrastructure and staffing shortages in the U.S. air traffic control system.

U.S. targets air traffic overhaul with flight cuts at Newark and controller incentives amid staffing crisis

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced plans to reduce flight operations at Newark Airport over the coming weeks to alleviate pressure on the system. He also proposed a multibillion-dollar modernization plan to upgrade communications systems with fiber or satellite technology, addressing the outdated equipment currently in use.

The FAA is grappling with a shortage of air traffic controllers, exacerbated by training halts during the pandemic and strict age-related hiring requirements. To address this, Duffy proposed extending the mandatory retirement age from 56 to 61 and providing a 20% upfront bonus to retain experienced controllers.

United Airlines cuts 35 daily flights from Newark as FAA pushes for scheduling reductions and infrastructure upgrades

United Airlines, Newark’s largest carrier, has responded by cutting 35 round-trip flights per day. CEO Scott Kirby emphasized that safety remains the top priority and that backup procedures are in place for equipment outages.

The FAA plans to hold a "scheduling reduction meeting" to coordinate with airlines on flight reductions. Despite the disruptions, officials assure that flying remains safe, and efforts are underway to modernize the nation's air traffic control infrastructure to prevent future outages.

IHG launches “Gate Escape” perk at Newark Airport Hotel amid power outages and flight delays

In response to ongoing power outages and traveler frustration at Newark Liberty International Airport, hotel chain IHG Hotels & Resorts has introduced a thoughtful promotion to ease the burden on affected passengers. The Crowne Plaza Newark Airport hotel now offers a special “IHG Gate Escape” deal: travelers who present proof of a delayed or canceled flight will receive a complimentary drink at the hotel bar and 500 IHG One Rewards points. This initiative comes as flight disruptions have increased due to recent electrical issues impacting air traffic and passenger experiences.

The promotion not only provides a small comfort during stressful delays but also encourages loyalty with added rewards. For those who prefer not to drink, the hotel offers the option to swap the beverage for a free appetizer instead. With 10,000 IHG points typically required for a free night, these bonuses can help travelers move closer to future discounts. This gesture shows how the hospitality industry can play a key role in improving customer satisfaction during transportation crises.
