Reports suggest that a significant data breach compromised account data for 89 million Steam users, creating a wave of concern throughout the gaming community. The breach is suspected to have come from a third party service and has raised security concerns as hackers have claimed to be selling the data on the dark web.

Though Valve, Steam's parent company, confirmed that the breach was not from their system, it remains unclear how the influx of data was acquired. Security experts have recommended that users change their passwords, turn on two-factor authentication, and be watchful of phishing attempts associated with this breach.

Hacker leaked 89 million accounts from Steam

It has been reported that the account information of 89 million Steam users has potentially been compromised due to a data breach.

While the determining factor has not yet been made clear, and in the meantime, we recommend changing your password and activating two-factor authentication.

On Sunday, the cybersecurity company Underdark published a LinkedIn post with information about the breach, which was then reposted on gaming-focused X user, Mellow_Online1, according to tech site XDA. The post from Underdark involved a hacker by the name Machine1337, claiming on a popular dark web forum that they hacked Steam and offered a dataset of over 89 million user records for $5,000.

The link also had a Telegram contact, a link to the sample data, and information from within Steam's internal vendor, implying even deeper access.

The breach is believed to have originated via a third-party service and not directly on Steam. At first, Mellow_Online1 thought the vendor Trillio to be involved, but Valve, Steam's parent company, confirmed it has no association with Trillio.

The specifics of the breach are still unknown. Mashable has contacted Valve for confirmation and additional clarification on the incident and will update the story if a response is received. In the meantime, Steam users are encouraged to reset their passwords, enable two-factor authentication, check their email for suspicious activity, and beware of phishing attempts in relation to Steam.
