South Carolina Baby found in squalid home with 47 animals and decomposing Goat carcass
A baby found living in squalor with over 40 more neglected animals and a decaying goat carcass has shocked a South Carolina community, igniting urgent concerns over child and animal welfare.
On May 19, 2025, Honea Path Police in South Carolina arrested Kayla Renard and Nicholas Foley after they found their 8-month-old baby living in horrid conditions, based on countless animal and sanitation health violations, as well as finding the infant with a decomposing goat in the bath of the home, surrounded by 47 other animals. The police had become involved after the Department of Social Services had made allegations regarding the safety of the infant, which opened an investigation. Police noted in their official report that the home was filled with raccoons, rabbits, dogs, cats, chickens, animal waste and other animal health and safety violations that made the air unbreathable, due to the ammonia and animal feces situation. In fact, other animals had no way of obtaining food and clean water when they discovered maggots in their bowls.
The infant was placed in an immediate safe haven with one of the relatives of the named parents, after police disclosed to the Department of Social Services creating a risky, unsafe and unsanitary situation in the home. When officers entered the premises, they discovered fleas, a multitude of animals including dead ones, from raccoons to rabbits to cats and dogs and other deceased animals, we have hundreds of animal feces, animal waste throughout the residence, and maggots in the pet bowls. Police found a rotting goat in of the residence, and contacted Dr. Kim Sanders Paws to assist us in suppressing the alarming situation.

Despite the squalid conditions, the child was said to be in good health. Renard and Nicholas were charged with … , and violations of the town ordinances. Miller told Fox Carolina, "Sitting there calm and really no words. You would think that they'd have". Both Renard and Foley were Foley posted bond on Tuesday.
Authorities noted that the couple showed little emotion during their arrest, which deeply concerned responding officers and neighbors alike. Animal control removed more than 40 animals from the property, many of which were severely malnourished or deceased.
Animal welfare and child safety concerns spark community vigilance after abuse case
The animals have since improved to the point, if they are not signed over Dr. Sanders added, "It's just hard to watch animals in a bad situation" animal welfare and child safety are now at the forefront of community concerns. Authorities are also working on their investigations.
The case received a lot of attention, bringing to light the need for people to be vigilant in their reports regarding suspected abuse or neglect. Community members should engage local authorities by reporting any concerns. The protection of children and animals is a priority for law enforcement and social services.
