A new study has revealed the rudest cities in the United States for 2025, highlighting the places where residents perceive manners and friendliness to be lacking. The rankings, based on a survey assessing social behavior and civility, offer insights into how Americans view politeness—or the lack of it—in their communities.
From major metropolitan areas to mid-sized cities, the study examined which places have the most unfriendly reputations, sparking debate among locals and travelers alike. While some cities have consistently ranked high in perceived rudeness, others have seen notable shifts in behavior over the past year.

Which U.S. cities are considered the most rude in 2025?
The United States is a melting pot of cultures and social behaviors, reflecting its diverse population. Depending on where you are, you might encounter unresponsive interactions, noisy public spaces, or reserved body language—all of which can come across as unusual or even impolite in certain settings.
According to a survey from Preply, who studied residents and social behaviors, here are America's least friendly cities in 2025:
Miami, FL
Philadelphia, PA
Tampa, FL
Louisville, KY
Oakland, CA
Boston, MA
Memphis, TN
Las Vegas, NV
Long Beach, CA
Charlotte, NC
To compile the rankings, Preply surveyed residents about the social behaviors they observe in their city and calculated a rudeness score based on their responses. While the official rankings provide an overview, locals also shared their personal perceptions of their city’s politeness—or lack thereof. Residents in Miami, FL, Oakland, CA, and Tucson, AZ believe that people in their city are ruder than in any other U.S. city.

Among the most common rude behaviors reported in Miami were a lack of public awareness, excessive loudness in shared spaces, and disrespect toward service workers, earning it the top spot for rudeness. Philadelphia, PA, ranked as the second-rudest city, but has actually improved since 2022, when it was ranked the rudest in the country. However, not all cities have shown progress.
Across the United States, people remain aware of rude behaviors that influence perceptions of Americans as a whole. When asked to rate their city’s politeness on a scale of 0 to 10—with 10 being the rudest—locals gave an average score of 4.9. Several factors contribute to shifts in social behaviors, and with the upcoming presidential election, 1 in 2 respondents reported that their city's residents have become increasingly rude over time.
Why are some cities perceived as ruder than others?
Numerous factors contribute to a city’s reputation for rudeness, including population density, stress levels, and cultural norms. The study found that:
- Larger cities tend to rank higher in rudeness, as crowded environments lead to less personal interaction and higher frustration levels.
- Traffic congestion and public transportation issues often influence a city’s perceived friendliness.
- Younger generations and longtime residents differ in how they perceive politeness, with older Americans more likely to say new residents are ruder than native locals.
- Political and economic stressors have led to a rise in negative social interactions in certain areas, with some residents reporting that their city has become less friendly in recent years.
