Euphoria’ star Hunter Schafer says new passport lists her as male—A consequence of Trump's anti-trans policies
‘Euphoria’ actress, Hunter Schaffer, reveals her new passport incorrectly lists her as male, a consequence of Trump-era policies affecting trans rights.

Hunter Schafer, a transgender actress and star of HBO’s hit series "Euphoria", has revealed that her newly issued U.S. passport incorrectly lists her gender as male—despite her selecting female on the application.
In a TikTok video, Schafer expressed her shock and frustration upon discovering the error, holding up her new passport to show the "M" marker on the document. She explained that her previous passport correctly listed her as female, making the change unexpected.
She criticized President Donald Trump’s policies on gender, stating that this issue is a direct result of the administration currently in power.
After learning about Trump's executive order, Schafer said her first reaction was: "I'll believe it when I see it."
"Today I saw it," she told fans.
Trump-Era Executive Order Eliminated Gender Marker Options
During his first day in office, Trump signed an executive order that recognized only two sexes—male and female—and declared that they cannot be changed. As a result, the U.S. State Department now issues passports based solely on a person’s biological sex at birth, removing options for gender identity-based selections.
Previously, Americans could self-select their gender on passports and even choose an "X" marker, which the Biden administration introduced in 2022 for non-binary, intersex, and gender-nonconforming individuals. Under the current policy, however, these options are no longer available.
"This isn’t just talk—this is real, and it’s happening. And no one—no matter their wealth, race, or appearance—is excluded from it.” Schaffer stated
She emphasized that this issue extends beyond her personal experience, affecting transgender individuals nationwide who now face barriers to updating their gender markers on official documents.
Hunter Schafer’s passport
Schafer applied for a new passport after losing her previous one while filming overseas. On the application, she indicated female as her gender, but when she received her replacement passport, it listed her as male.
She now faces potential travel issues, especially when going through border security, as her legal documents are now inconsistent.
“I’m pretty sure this is going to mean I have to out myself to border patrol agents much more often than I would like to—or is really necessary,” Schafer said.
