The 2025 Oscars ceremony aimed to honor the iconic James Bond franchise with a special tribute. However, the performance left many viewers perplexed due to its unconventional approach and timing. Many took to social media to express their frustration with the execution, with some reasons stated were the length of the tribute and the snubbing of former 007 actor Daniel Craig.

The tribute featured performances by artists such as Margaret Qualley, Lisa of Blackpink, Doja Cat, and Raye—talented entertainers but with no direct association to the James Bond legacy. This choice diverged from expectations, as many anticipated appearances by figures closely linked to the franchise, such as former Bond actors or musicians like Adele, who famously performed Bond theme songs.

Viewers react after James Bond tribute

The tribute showcased performances by Lisa of BLACKPINK, Doja Cat, and Raye, each delivering renditions of classic Bond themes. Lisa performed “Live and Let Die,” Doja Cat took on “Diamonds Are Forever,” and Raye concluded with “Skyfall.” Despite their individual talents, viewers questioned the relevance of these artists to the Bond legacy. Doja Cat, in particular, faced backlash for her rendition, with some labeling it as “out of tune” and lacking the depth of the original.

The Oscars' homage to James Bond, intended to celebrate the franchise's storied history, instead sparked debates about its execution. The selection of performers with no direct ties to Bond, coupled with the backdrop of the franchise's transition, led to a tribute that felt disjointed to many. One viewer commented, “The James Bond tribute is extremely superfluous and disappointing. The original singers are still alive for Pete's sake.”

Bad timing? Franchise transition

The tribute's timing coincided with significant changes within the Bond franchise. The Broccoli family's decision to sell creative control to Amazon marked a pivotal shift, raising concerns about the franchise's future direction. Hollywood insiders expressed apprehension that Amazon's influence might lead to spinoffs and television series, potentially diluting the essence of the classic spy narrative.

A writer or director has yet to be announced for the next Bond film. The Broccoli family has long safeguarded the character, resisting modern updates or excessive franchise interconnectivity. Furthermore, their refusal to grant directors a final cut has discouraged filmmakers like Christopher Nolan, who showed interest after Tenet.
