As of March 15, 2025, liquidation sales are entering their final days for several major retailers in the U.S., including Big Lots, Party City, Macy’s, and Kohl’s.

With over 15,000 store closures expected this year—more than double 2024’s numbers—shoppers are racing to snag deep discounts before these stores shut their doors for good. Check store locators and call ahead to confirm availability, as many locations are closing earlier than expected.

Big Lots: Final weekend of liquidation

Big Lots has announced its stores are in the “final 3 days or less” of liquidation, with prices slashed until everything is gone. The Columbus, Ohio-based retailer, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September 2024, once operated over 1,300 stores across 48 states. As of March 14, only 366 locations remain open.

What’s next: While all Big Lots stores are closing, about 200 locations will reopen under new ownership by Variety Wholesalers, with the first wave set to launch in April.

Party City: Up to 80% off in final weeks

Party City, a staple for party supplies for nearly 40 years, is closing all of its nearly 800 stores. The store announced in December 2024 that it would shutter all of its locations, over a year after it first declared bankruptcy.

The retailer’s liquidation sale in its "final 2 weeks," offering discounts of up to 80% off. Shoppers are encouraged to check the store locator to confirm their nearest location is still open.

Other retailers wrapping up sales

Joann: The arts and crafts retailer is closing all stores after filing for bankruptcy. Discounts of up to 50% are available in-store, but gift cards are no longer accepted.

Dollar General: The discount chain is closing 96 stores and 45 pOpshelf locations, while converting six pOpshelf stores to Dollar General outlets.

Macy’s and Kohl’s: Strategic Closures Underway

Macy’s is closing 66 stores as part of its “A Bold New Chapter” plan, with liquidation sales running for 8–12 weeks. The retailer plans to shutter 150 stores by the end of 2026, focusing on its 350 remaining locations.

Kohl’s, meanwhile, is closing 27 underperforming stores by April 2025, representing less than 3% of its 1,150-store fleet. CFO Jill Timm emphasized that the company’s overall store portfolio remains “incredibly healthy.”
