According to American media, the closure of many Big Lots stores was due to a combination of economic factors, including a downturn in the housing market during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the retailer is planning to reopen 219 stores across the U.S. in 2025.
Why Big Lots go bankrupt in America?
On September 9, 2024, Big Lots filed for bankruptcy in the U.S. In a statement, the company cited financial pressures as the cause.
During that time, the retailer faced inflation, high interest rates, and a slowdown in post-pandemic consumer spending, all of which contributed to its financial struggles. At its peak, the company operated 1,300 stores across 48 states.
As part of its bankruptcy proceedings, Big Lots sold a number of its locations to Variety Wholesalers—a company with extensive experience in the discount retail space, owning chains like Roses Discount and Bargain Town.
According to USA Today, Variety Wholesalers is behind the reopening and management Big Lots stores going forward.

Nine Big Lots stores will open on April 10 across six states:

- 2911 Hershberger Rd. NW, Roanoke, VA
How many stores are reopening, and what's the timeline for Big Lots?
During a press release, Variety Wholesalers announced that 219 Big Lots locations will reopen. The first round began, starting April 10, 2025.
According to Variety Wholesalers, Big Lots will reopen stores in three phases. After the initial nine launch this week, 55 more are expected to open in May. The final 155 stores will reopen in June. A nationwide “grand opening celebration” is planned for this fall once all locations are up and running.
