In 2024, then-President Joe Biden made headlines by proclaiming March 31 as Trans Visibility Day, a day that coincidentally fell on Easter Sunday.

While the date has been internationally recognized since 2009, Biden’s decision to proclaim it on Easter sparked intense criticism from conservative and Christian groups who felt it undermined the significance of the Christian holiday.

Joe Biden's controversial timing of Trans Visibility Day

Even when it was purely a coincidence that Biden's announcement fell on Easter Sunday, as the date, March 31, has been set aside internationally as the Transgender Day of Visibility since 2009; that did not save him from the sharp criticism conservative groups threw his way.

In his statement, Biden expressed his constant support for trans people in America saying: “You are loved. You are heard. You are understood. You belong. You are America, and my entire Administration and I have your back.” However, many conservative groups accused him of disrespecting Easter.

Biden defended Trans Visibility Day amid the backlash

While many important figures like now-President Donald Trump, Governor Kristi Noem and Speaker Mike Johnson, condemned the proclamation (and Trump even called for an apology to Christians), Biden did not back down.

The White House pointed out that March 31 had been used for 3 years without any kind of controversy and Spokesperson Andrew Bates emphasized Biden’s commitment to religious unity, noting that the president (also a Christian), celebrated Easter and wished everyone well during the holiday.
