General Motors recalls nearly 600,000 GMC vehicles due to engine issues – Is your vehicle affected?

General Motors has recalled nearly 600,000 vehicles, including models from Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC, due to engine defects that could lead to severe damage or complete engine failure.

General Motors has publicly announced a recall for GM's Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC makes of nearly 600,000 vehicles, as a result of possible engine defects that involve serious engine damage or total engine failure. The recall was submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on April 24, and includes vehicles from the 2021-2024 model years.

The focus of the problem is in the engine, with defects in the connecting rod and crankshaft. These issues could create severe performance issues and cause dangerous failures. The way forward for vehicle owners is through GM's voluntary offer of free inspection and repair through an authorized dealership. The recall includes popular models such as the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado, and GMC Yukon.

General Motors recalls vehicles due to defects failures

According to a notice reported to the National HIghway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on April 24, the recall covers 597,630 total vehicles, including 126,027 Cadillacs, 174,208 Chevrolets and 297,395 GMC cars.

The issue identified has to do with a reported defect involving the engine connecting rod and/or crankshaft, which could lead to engine failure or damage. Drivers may notice signs of the defect with sounds of knocking or banging sounds coming from the engine under acceleration, or worn by the check engine light illuminating.

They may also notice symptoms related to engine performance as unusual shift indication, unusual hesitation, or could be a reduction in acceleration.

Which GM vehicles are affected by the recall?

The recall applies to the following vehicles equipped with a 6.2L V8 gas engine from the 2021-2024 model years:

  • Cadillac Escalade (2021-2024)
  • Cadillac Escalade ESV (2021-2024)
  • Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (2021-2024)
  • Chevrolet Suburban (2021-2024)
  • Chevrolet Tahoe (2021-2024)
  • GMC Sierra 1500 (2021-2024)
  • GMC Yukon (2021-2024)
  • GMC Yukon XL (2021-2024)

How to check, and what should I do if my vehicle is altered?

If you own a qualified recalled vehicles, you can return to your Cadillac, Chevrolet, or GMC dealership for free engine inspection and repair or replacement. If your vehicle passes inspection you'll then receive a new oil fill cap, high viscosity oil, oil filter change, and new owner's manual all for free.

Owner notification letters are anticipated to be mailing on June 9, 2025.
