New York dad is accused of murdering her pregnant wife
A New York man charged with murdering his pregnant wife and hurting their two daughters was sentenced to prison this week.
Drew Garnier, 33, pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and two counts of first-degree assault as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison, with 15 years of supervised release.
One victim impact statement was read out in court before sentencing, which was delivered by Garnier's former father-in-law. He said his daughter Samantha was killed by her husband because "he wanted a boy."
Samantha, who was 29 and five months pregnant, had just discovered their third child was also going to be a girl when she was stabbed to death by Garnier.
The father-in-law also informed us he has since adopted the two granddaughters. "I am their father now," he said. "I will protect them."
Garnier was arrested on September 5, 2024, after police responded to a domestic disturbance at the family's Centerville home.
The New York State Police report that all three women in the residence had several stab wounds and were tended to by officers until EMTs arrived.
The victims were airlifted to hospitals due to the severity of their injuries. Samantha was pronounced dead upon arrival, but her two daughters survived.
The Delaware County District Attorney stated that the trauma that the girls had to endure was taken into consideration during the plea deal, which resulted in a reduced sentence for Garnier.
District Attorney Shawn J. Smith said he didn't believe the plea deal was ideal but wanted to spare the daughters the trauma of a long trial so they could focus on healing.
The judge ordered Garnier to have no contact with his daughters until 2056, though the girls may petition the court to change this order if they wish to speak with their father one day.
