FDA has recently announced a recall of certain frozen vegetable products due to potential health hazards. The affected items include the Taste of Deutschland Buttered Vegetables and Frozen Chopped Spinach, which may pose risks to consumers with specific allergies or sensitivities. This recall has been initiated to ensure customer safety and prevent any adverse health effects.

The Taste of Deutschland Buttered Vegetables recall is due to undeclared milk allergens, posing a risk to individuals with milk allergies. The Frozen Chopped Spinach recall is due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause serious infections. Lidl has also urged customers to return these products to their nearest store for a full refund and has emphasized their commitment to maintaining high-quality standards.

Products Affected by the Recall

The specific products involved in this recall are:

Taste of Deutschland Buttered Vegetables: Packaged in 10.5 oz boxes with UPC 4 056489 122876. These products were distributed between October 21, 2023, and December 19, 2024, across Lidl US store locations in Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia.

Frozen Chopped Spinach: Sold in 12-ounce bags marked with lot numbers R17742 or R17963 and a “best buy” date of 09/10/23. These packages were shipped to Lidl supermarkets in Delaware, Georgia, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Maryland, North Carolina, and Virginia.

Health Risks Associated with the Recalled Products

Consuming products with undeclared milk allergens can lead to serious or life-threatening allergic reactions in individuals with milk allergies. Symptoms may include hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, and anaphylaxis. It is crucial for consumers with known milk allergies to avoid these products to prevent adverse health effects.

The potential contamination of Frozen Chopped Spinach with Listeria monocytogenes is also a significant concern. Listeria can cause symptoms such as diarrhea and fever, and in severe cases, the infection can spread beyond the gut, leading to more serious complications. Individuals over the age of 65, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Symptoms can appear a week to four weeks after consuming contaminated food, but cases have occurred up to 70 days post-consumption.
