What is the REAL ID and Why is it Mandatory?

The REAL ID is a federally compliant identification card distinguished by a gold star in the top-right corner. It serves as proof of identity and legal status, meeting federal security standards. From May 7, 2025, individuals will need a REAL ID for the following:

  • Boarding domestic flights within the United States.
  • Entering federal buildings or military bases.
  • Accessing nuclear power facilities.

Requirements for Obtaining a REAL ID

Immigrants looking to obtain a REAL ID must visit their state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and provide the following documents:

  2. Social Security Number (SSN): Original Social Security card or a valid SSN document.
