Starting May 7, 2025, a significant change will affect immigrants and residents in the United States: the REAL ID will become a mandatory document for various essential activities. This change stems from federal regulations aimed at enhancing security measures nationwide. With this shift, a traditional driver's license will no longer be sufficient for activities such as domestic air travel or accessing federal facilities.

The REAL ID Act, established after the September 11 attacks, mandates stricter identity verification standards. Immigrants and citizens alike must meet specific requirements to obtain this identification. Understanding these new regulations is crucial to avoid complications in daily activities and essential processes.

What is the REAL ID and Why is it Mandatory?

The REAL ID is a federally compliant identification card distinguished by a gold star in the top-right corner. It serves as proof of identity and legal status, meeting federal security standards. From May 7, 2025, individuals will need a REAL ID for the following:

  • Boarding domestic flights within the United States.
  • Entering federal buildings or military bases.
  • Accessing nuclear power facilities.

This regulation applies to all U.S. residents, including immigrants with legal status, and marks a step towards uniform security measures across the country.

Requirements for Obtaining a REAL ID

Immigrants looking to obtain a REAL ID must visit their state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and provide the following documents:

  1. Proof of Identity: Valid passport, green card, or approved immigration document.
  2. Social Security Number (SSN): Original Social Security card or a valid SSN document.
  3. Proof of Residency: Utility bills, rental agreements, or bank statements showing proof of address.
  4. Legal Immigration Status: Documentation proving lawful presence in the United States.

Each state may have slight variations in requirements, so checking the official DMV website is strongly recommended.

How Will This Change Affect Immigrants?

For many immigrants, obtaining a REAL ID may pose challenges, particularly for those lacking specific documents. Without this new identification:

  • Air travel will be restricted: Boarding domestic flights without a REAL ID will no longer be possible.
  • Limited access to federal facilities: Certain government services and buildings will become inaccessible.
  • Identification verification issues: Routine identification checks may become problematic without this federally approved ID.

Immigrants must take proactive steps to ensure they meet the requirements and avoid last-minute delays.
