The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security (TDOSHS) has expanded REAL ID appointment availability, adding 1,432 extra slots per day at Driver Services Centers statewide. This increase comes just three months before Tennessee's REAL ID compliance deadline, allowing more residents to schedule their appointments in time.

The REAL ID Act requires individuals 18 and older to have a REAL ID-compliant credential if they plan to board domestic flights, enter federal buildings, military bases, or nuclear facilities. Tennessee began issuing REAL IDs on July 1, 2019, and so far, approximately 2.7 million residents have obtained one, while 1.9 million Tennesseans have opted not to upgrade.

More Tennesseans are getting REAL ID-Compliant credentials

According to TDOSHS, approximately 2.7 million Tennesseans have already received their REAL ID, while 1.9 million residents have chosen not to upgrade to the new credential. Officials are encouraging those who still need a REAL ID to take advantage of the increased appointment availability before the last-minute rush.

Commissioner Jeff Long urged residents to schedule their appointments early to avoid last-minute delays and long wait times. To apply for a REAL ID, individuals must provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal presence, their Social Security Number, and two documents proving Tennessee residency.

While obtaining a REAL ID is optional, non-REAL ID licenses will still be valid for purposes such as driving, purchasing alcohol and tobacco, voting, and accessing federal benefits. However, residents who decide not to get a REAL ID will need an alternative federally accepted identification, such as a valid passport, to fly within the U.S.

How much does a Real ID cost in Tennessee?

The cost of a REAL ID in Tennessee is $28 for both renewals and first-time applicants. If you apply for a REAL ID outside of your regular renewal period, you will need to pay an additional fee of $8 to $12 for a duplicate card.

As the REAL ID deadline approaches, state officials urge residents to schedule their appointments early to avoid potential processing delays.
