From Visa Waiver Program expansion to REAL ID implementation: Check out the new entry requirements for the U.S. in 2025
In 2025, the U.S. will implement key entry policy changes, including the expansion of the Visa Waiver Program and the mandatory use of REAL ID for domestic flights, affecting both international travellers and residents.

In 2025, the United States will implement significant changes to its entry policies for international travellers. These modifications aim to enhance border security and update the admission procedures to the country. It's essential for visitors to stay informed about these new requirements to ensure a smooth entry process.
One of the most notable changes is the expansion of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), allowing additional countries to travel to the U.S. without a visa for short stays. Furthermore, updated regulations regarding identification requirements for domestic and international flights will take effect.

Measures for the Visa Waiver Program and REAL ID implementation
As of 2025, the U.S. has added Romania to the VWP, enabling its citizens to travel without a visa for up to 90 days for tourism or business purposes. To qualify, travellers must obtain an authorization through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before departure. ESTA approval is mandatory and must be secured at least 72 hours before boarding. The authorization is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
Starting May 7, 2025, all travellers wishing to board domestic flights in the U.S. must present an ID compliant with REAL ID standards. This measure, part of the REAL ID Act, aims to strengthen security at airports and federal facilities. Driver’s licenses and state ID cards that meet REAL ID requirements will have a star symbol in the upper right corner. Travelers without a REAL ID-compliant identification must present a passport or another federally accepted form of ID.
Recommendations for Travellers
Given these new requirements, travellers are advised to:
- Check passport validity: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned entry date to the U.S.
- Apply for ESTA in advance: If you are a citizen of a VWP country, obtain ESTA approval at least 72 hours before travel.
- Upgrade to a REAL ID: If you reside in the U.S., contact your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to get a REAL ID-compliant license or ID before May 7, 2025.
Through a security alliance, U.S. authorities established that some applicants will be able to enter the country without applying for a traditional visa. This is due to the Visa Waiver Program, in which countries that meet the established requirements participate. These countries must have immigration laws, application of an anti-terrorism law and a high level of control of travel documents. Staying informed and prepared will ensure a smoother and more secure travel experience when entering or moving within the U.S.
