New York's Governor Kathy Hochul introduced a new initiative for jobseekers, called 'You're Hired', which comes in response to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) efforts to reduce government spending by eliminating positions deemed unnecessary.

While the agency claims it can reduce and save $65 billion in taxpayers, New York is stepping in to help affected workers with this program designed to offer job opportunities in New York State service to federal employees impacted by the guts.

Governor Hochul emphasized that New York is ready to welcome skilled workers influenced by these potential cuts.

“The federal government might say, ‘You’re fired,’ but here in New York, we say, ‘You’re hired.’ We love federal workers,” Hochul stated. “Whatever your skills, we value public service.”

According to an Associated Press report on Tuesday, 21 DOGE employees resigned, citing ethical concerns over dismantling critical public services.

"We swore to serve the American people and uphold our oath to the Constitution, regardless of who is in office," the employees wrote in a letter to DOGE head Elon Musk. "However, it has become clear that we can no longer honor those commitments."

On Monday, Musk emailed over 2 million federal employees asking them to provide a summary of their work from the previous week. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) instructed employees to submit five bullet points detailing their accomplishments, but later advised them to disregard the email.

DOGE claims to have saved taxpayers $65 billion through its cost-cutting measures as of Monday.

Thousands of jobs available in New York State

This isn't Hochul’s first initiative aimed at bolstering New York’s public workforce. In 2024, the NY HELPS program temporarily eliminated civil service exam requirements for various job openings, leading to nearly 24,000 new hires in state government and an additional 6,000 appointments at the local level.

"New York State jobs offer flexible schedules, competitive salaries, and unmatched benefits. With offices all over the State, you can always work close to home. Plus, by joining New York State, you'll lend your skills to programs that touch the lives of millions," the new jobs website states.

Officials say to speed up the hiring process, New York has streamlined the application procedure.
