The new traffic rules in New York aim to enhance road safety and close the loophole for "ghost vehicles," which are those that avoid tolls and fines because cameras can't detect their license plates.
As a result, vehicle plates must not only be visible but also clean and unaltered; otherwise, the driver will be penalized. To avoid making a mistake under these new rules that could cost you your license, you must:
- Ensure your vehicle's license plate is securely fastened.
- Make sure it's completely visible, clean, and unobstructed, so it can be easily seen by inspectors, police, and cameras.
- Do not place reflective materials, covers, or substances that obstruct the readability of the plate.
- Position the plate between 30 and 120 centimeters above the ground.
- Avoid driving or parking if your plate is not visible.
- Pay your tolls and catch up on any pending fines.
- If an officer inspects your vehicle and finds your plate is not visible, you may receive a fine and have your violation history reviewed.
