Kohl's is making significant changes to its retail strategy, with 27 of its stores set to close this Saturday, March 29. These closures are part of a broader restructuring initiative aimed at improving the company's financial position amid declining sales.

The announcement, which was made earlier this year, is part of a larger effort to adapt to the evolving retail landscape. With over 1,120 stores still operating across the United States, Kohl’s is making tough decisions to ensure its survival in a competitive market.

Which Kohl's stores are closing this March 29 in the U.S.?

The closures come after a decline in sales, with Kohl's reporting a 9.4% decrease in sales during the fourth quarter of 2024 and a 7.2% decline for the entire year. The company anticipates a 2% decline in sales for 2025. Despite these challenges, Kohl's remains committed to its business strategy and is focusing on maintaining profitability in its strongest-performing stores.

Why Kohl's is closing their stores across the United States?

The decision to shut down these stores was announced in January, alongside broader changes within the company. These changes include modifications to the executive team, a 10% reduction in its corporate workforce, and the cessation of Amazon product returns in certain stores. Additionally, an e-commerce fulfillment center in San Bernardino, California, will also close in May.

In response to the closures, Kohl's has offered affected employees a competitive severance package or the chance to apply for other positions within the company. The company emphasized that these difficult decisions are necessary for securing its future and strengthening its position in the market.

Although the closures represent a significant shift, Kohl's is optimistic that these adjustments will better position the company to compete in the evolving retail landscape, with an increasing focus on e-commerce.
