Ace Hardware will give away 1 million American flags in honor of Memorial Day; discover how to participate and what else to expect during the federal holiday.

Memorial Day, observed annually in the United States, is a federal holiday dedicated to honoring the memory of the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Originally held on May 30 since 1868, the commemoration has been observed on the last Monday of May since 1971, as established by Congress.
In 2025, Memorial Day will take place on Monday, May 26. Across the country, patriotic tributes include flying the American flag at home, attending ceremonies, and visiting cemeteries. This date also marks the unofficial start of summer in the U.S., bringing increased tourism, outdoor activities, and seasonal sales.

What closes and what stays open on Memorial Day
As a federal holiday, Memorial Day affects the operating hours of many services and institutions. Government offices, banks, schools, and postal services will be closed or operating under reduced hours. It’s important to check ahead for any changes, especially if planning errands or travel over the long weekend.
Retailers and grocery stores typically remain open but may adjust their schedules. Large chain stores and restaurants often use the occasion to run promotional sales, while local businesses might close for the day. To avoid inconvenience, customers should confirm hours via official websites or social media updates as the holiday approaches.
