IRS $3,000 tax refund June 2025: Who qualifies and when you’ll get it
IRS refund processing is underway, but paper filers may face delays; e-filing speeds up refunds for 2024 returns.

As most Americans who have filed their 2024 tax returns and ask for an extension, the IRS has begun processing return for refunds. However, recent budget cuts and staffing levels cuts, especially for those who mailed in paper returns, can cause delays.
Your refund will not be processed until the IRS has your tax return on file and has reviewed it. Due to recent reductions at the IRS, taxpayers may experience some delays in receiving refunds this year.
IRS tax refund June 2025: Filing paper or electronically
If you file your return on paper, you can expect to wait longer for your return than e-filers. The IRS just recently began opening and distributing paper returns. Paper returns must be worked by an IRS employee. Understandably, this process is very slow, and it may take some time before you know if your return was accepted and when your refund will be issued.
Filing electronically is typically faster and easier. The IRS will process e-filed returns almost immediately, unless the IRS flagged something for review. For taxpayers with routine tax situations, especially employees with typical positions, this process will often be somewhat speedy. The IRS also initiated a Direct File process which allows taxpayers with relatively basic returns to file directly with the IRS without engaging third-party companies, further expediting the processing.
