Walgreens will be closing down more than 20 stores this month as part of a larger effort to boost profitability and streamline its operations. The drugstore giant has increasingly cut physical locations in response to changing consumer habits. These store closings come on a 2024 announcement to shutter roughly 1,200 underperforming stores nationwide over the next three years.

The company is experiencing these shifts while many large retailers close profitable store, as inflation and decreased foot traffic cuts into total revenue. Walgreens reported a $3 billion loss for the last portion of fiscal 2024, largely attributed to rising costs and legal settlements.

Why are Walgreens stores closing in the United States?

These closures are being announced as CEO Tim Wentworth unveiled a "turnaround plan" for the company.

"We are confident it will yield significant financial and consumer benefits over the long term," Wentworth previously said.

As consumers shift towards online prescription services like Amazon, pharmacies are facing greater financial pressures, particularly with rising costs.

In the last quarter of fiscal year 2024, Walgreens experienced a $3 billion loss, compared to a $180 million loss in the last quarter of the previous year. Wentworth said only 6,000 store remain profitable.

"This solid base supports our conviction in a retail pharmacy-led model that is relevant to our consumers, and we intend to invest in these stores over the next several years," he said.

Walgreens reported $37.55 billion in sales for the fourth quarter, representing a 6% increase compared to the previous year, with sales and adjusted profits beating Wall Street's outlook, according to CNBC. The $3 billion loss includes a valuation allowance mainly referencing opioid settlements, CNBC reported.
