What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth is a holiday which honors the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States in 1865. After the end of the American Civil War in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which meant freedom for over 3,000,000 slaves in the Confederate states.
However, it wasn't until Major General Granger and his troops arrived in Texas two years later and enforced the edict that 250,000 people who were being kept as slaves were finally freed, according to the National Museum of African American History & Culture.
