How does CONMEBOL World Cup 2026 qualifying works

The CONMEBOL qualification process for the 2026 FIFA World Cup sees all 10 member nations competing in a round-robin format, where each team plays 18 matches—one at home and one away against each opponent. Points are awarded as follows: three for a win, one for a draw, and none for a loss.

Thanks to the expanded World Cup format, the top six teams in CONMEBOL standings will automatically secure a spot in the tournament. The team finishing in seventh place will enter an inter-confederation playoff, giving them a second opportunity to qualify.

Final rankings are based on points, goal difference, and goal scored. This qualification system is regarded as one of the most challenging in global football, particularly due to the high-altitude home matches played by teams like Bolivia and Ecuador.
