Hopkins, Minnesota, temporarily renamed itself "Paige Bueckers, Minnesota" to celebrate the Dallas Wings rookie’s first WNBA game, with citywide tributes and events.

The city of Hopkins, Minnesota, went all out to celebrate native Paige Bueckers’ WNBA debut by temporarily renaming itself in her honor. In a tribute to the basketball star, the city changed its name to "Paige Bueckers, Minnesota" on Friday, marking the day of her first professional game with the Dallas Wings. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held, and local businesses participated in the celebration with themed food, drinks, and events.
Streets were renamed “Bueckers Boulevard,” a local brewery released a custom beer, an ice cream shop introduced a Bueckers-inspired flavor, and even a sushi roll was named after her. The day concluded with a public watch party at Hopkins High School, where Bueckers became a household name after leading the team to the 2019 state championship.

Celebrating a local star with deep community ties
Hopkins Mayor Patrick Hanlon said the city was proud to honor Bueckers not only for her accomplishments on the court but also for her dedication to the community. Bueckers, who won the Wooden Award at UConn and was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, is remembered in her hometown for her volunteer work and leadership.
As a high school student, Bueckers started a food shelf for low-income families and has continued to support local causes even after rising to national fame. “We’re proud to name our city after her for a day,” Hanlon said. “She’s not just a basketball star—she’s a real person and a real community member.”
From High School phenom to WNBA rookie
Bueckers was already a national sensation before joining the WNBA. A standout at Hopkins High School, she was named Gatorade National Player of the Year and was widely considered the top high school player in the country. Her transition to UConn was historic, becoming the first freshman to win the Wooden Award in 2021 and earning All-America honors three times.
Now a professional athlete, Bueckers is embarking on a new chapter with the Dallas Wings. Her debut game against the Minnesota Lynx was not only a significant moment for WNBA fans but a source of pride for the small town where her journey began. Hopkins’ citywide tribute highlights the deep connection between the rising star and the community that helped shape her.
