Luka Modrić, 39 years old and still a Croatian midfielder, declared that he'll leave Real Madrid after the upcoming Club World Cup, ending a fairy tale 13-year run with the club. Luka will have joined Real Madrid from Tottenham that year in August 2012, and since the move Modrić has enjoyed success, winning 28 major trophies, including the prospect of a sixth Champions League title and a fourth La Liga title. Modric's exit will also conclude the era of the Madrid midfield, which he and Casemiro and Toni Kroos dominated for large segments. Despite having a lesser role in recent seasons with Madrid, Modric remained an important resource, and has featured in 34 La Liga matches this year, including 16 starts.

Luka reflected on his experience with the club in an impassioned farewell via social media post. He wrote he was proud of accomplishing more than he ever dreamed he would when he originally arrived at the club in 2012 saying, "Playing for Real Madrid changed my life as a football player and as a person". He also announced that his last game on the Santiago Bernabeu would be Saturday against Real Sociedad. The club has said they will honour Modric during that match, and celebrate his contributions and legacy.
