Google has updated its inactivity policy, stating that personal accounts unused for at least two years may be deleted, along with their contents, which started on December 2023. This includes data from services like Gmail and Google Photos. The policy aims to enhance security by reducing the risk of account hijacking, as the ones inactive are more vulnerable.

The updated policy specifies that any personal Google Account inactive for two years is subject to deletion. This deadline also encompasses all associated content, such as emails, documents, and photos. However, this policy does not affect accounts for organizations like schools or businesses.

How to keep your Google account active

To prevent your account from being deleted, ensure it is active by:

  • Signing in at least once every two years.
  • Reading or sending emails.
  • Using Google Drive.
  • Watching YouTube videos.
  • Downloading apps from the Google Play Store.
  • Using Google Search.
  • Using Sign in with Google to access third-party apps or services.

Google will send multiple notifications to both the account email and recovery email before deletion. It is essential to keep your recovery information up to date to receive these alerts.

How to secure your Gmail, Photos and other data

Those concerned about potential data loss, should consider backing up their information using Google's Takeout feature. This tool allows users to download data from various Google services, which ensures having copies of important emails, photos, and documents.

Some accounts might not be impacted by this policy, such as those with active subscriptions or accounts that have uploaded YouTube videos. However, it is advisable not to rely solely on these exceptions and to maintain regular activity on the accounts.

To safeguard your Gmail, Google Photos, and other data, ensure you sign in and use your Google Account regularly. Regular activity not only keeps your account active but also reduces the risk of losing valuable information due to inactivity.
