Tens of thousands of users have expressed frustration as Reddit and X, two major social media platforms, experienced significant outages.
The disruptions took place on Thursday afternoon, affecting nearly 35,000 Reddit users, according to monitoring site Downdetector.com.
Users trying to log into Reddit were greeted with a message saying, “This page isn’t working right now.” Among those affected, 47% experienced issues with the Reddit app, 42% with the website, and 11% reported server connection problems.
Reddit later posted an update acknowledging the infrastructure issues and stated it was investigating the situation.
While many users tried to make light of the outage, with one joking, “What am I supposed to read while eating?” and another adding, “How will I find answers to my niche questions now…,” others were less forgiving, with one person commenting, “Reddit is down? Time to go outside and remember what sunlight feels like.”
According to Downdetector.com, most of the issues were reported by users on the West Coast, particularly in Los Angeles and San Francisco, where Reddit is based. There were also outages reported in New York.
In addition, nearly 16,000 users of X, the platform owned by Elon Musk, also reported issues. Of those, 53% had problems with the X app, while 45% reported issues with the website.
