Bon Jovi's Soul Kitchen faces criticism from Toms River Mayor for attracting homeless to library
Jon Bon Jovi's Soul Kitchen in Toms River faces backlash from Mayor Daniel Rodrick, who accuses the nonprofit of turning the Ocean County Library into a "day shelter" for the homeless.

Jon Bon Jovi’s Soul Kitchen nonprofit is facing significant criticism from Toms River Mayor Daniel Rodrick, who claims the community restaurant is drawing homeless individuals to the Ocean County Library.
The Soul Kitchen, located at the Toms River branch, offers meals for a suggested price of $12, but Mayor Rodrick argues that its presence has led to safety concerns for library visitors. While the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation defends the restaurant’s mission, local officials and residents remain divided over its impact on the community.
Mayor Rodrick's concerns over library’s changing environment
Toms River's Mayor, Daniel Rodrick, expressed concerned over the library. He said that a traditionally quiet space for reading and learning, is now a gathering place for homeless people struggling with addiction and mental health issues.
He highlighted the fact that it has now become an unsafe space for families visiting the library, and the priority should be a safe space for everyone, including children.

Jon Bon Jovi's Soul Kitchen defends its mission
Jon Bon Jovi's Soul Kitchen, issued a statement to news outlets saying: "Through our JBJ Soul Kitchen, we connect people to resources and services. Whether they need employment, mental health support, or housing, we try to remove the barriers that are keeping them from thriving, not just surviving."
The team emphasized its goal to address hunger and provide a sense of community, and not just a shelter for the homeless. Ocean County Commissioner Jennifer Bacchione, answered Mayor Rodrick’s claims, stating that it is not a "a soup kitchen" given that it doesn't offer free food, as patrons are encouraged to participate in cleaning up or volunteering if they can't afford the meals.
However, Jon Bon Jovi's Soul Kitchen's future is still uncertain, as their lease is set to expire in May 2025. Whether or not Soul Kitchen will continue operating in the library space, will depend entirely on conversations with both parties and local leaders.
