Malachi Crain, a 22-year-old senior from the University of Alabama, tragically lost his life during a camping trip in Georgia on April 5, 2025. Crain, who was pursuing a degree in computer science and math, was one of four men camping near Panther Creek Falls in the Chattahoochee National Forest when a tree fell onto their hammocks.

The incident resulted in Crain’s death, while another individual was left pinned under the tree for hours before being rescued.

Malachi Crain's rescue efforts, complicated by rugged terrain

The Fannin County Emergency Management Agency confirmed that rescuers responded to the emergency call they received around 2 a.m, but difficult terrain delayed their access to the site.

Rescuers had to hike more than 8 miles round-trip through steep inclines and dense forest to get to the victims. However, they were assisted by a helicopter which saved time, minimizing risk to rescuers.

Who was Malachi Crain?

Malachhi Crain was a computer science and math major and active member of the Bama Catholic Ministry. He was also the 2024 Vice President of Liturgy and as a leader in Bible studies and mentor for other people in the community.

His friends and family have expressed their sorrow, and a memorial mass was held in Alabama and South Carolina.
