At the kickoff of San Francisco’s Climate Week, former Vice President Al Gore made headlines by drawing a controversial comparison between the Trump administration and Nazi Germany.

Speaking to an audience of around 150 climate advocates and policymakers on April 21, Gore warned about the dangers of power-driven misinformation and its impact on democracy, climate policy, and truth itself.

Former Vice-President Al Gore stated the importance of drawing lessons from history to not repeat the same mistakes. “It was [Jürgen] Habermas’ mentor, Theodore Adorno, who wrote that the first step in that nation’s descent into hell was... ‘the conversion of all questions of truth into questions of power,’” he said.

He questioned how the Trump administration was after the distinction of true and false and creating their own version of reality on various topics to consolidate power and control, like scientific facts and climate change, just like authoritarian regimes do.

Al Gore criticizes Trump's false climate claims

As a very established figure in environmental activism, Al Gore publicly criticized Donald Trump's most infamous climate change related claims in his speech. The most well-known claim probably was that climate change was a "Chinese hoax", along with "coal is clean" and "wind turbines cause cancer".

Gore highlighted the fact that this kind of misinformation is not only dangerous to future generations, but also undermines public trust.
