Pope Francis’ mortal remains transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica for public viewing ahead of funeral

The mortal remains of Pope Francis have been moved to St. Peter’s Basilica, where they will lie in state for the faithful to pay their respects ahead of his funeral on Saturday.

Following the death of Pope Francis, his mortal remains were moved from Casa Santa Marta to St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.

The College of Cardinals led the Rite of Translation, beginning with a prayer at Casa Santa Marta, and continued with a procession through Vatican grounds to St. Peter’s Square, where more than 20,000 people gathered to pay their respects.

The Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, Cardinal Kevin Farrel started the liturgical rite with a prayer to express gratitude to God over Pope Francis' 12 years of service, asked for his eternal peace and comfort for those who esteemed him.

Pope Francis' coffin was placed in front of the Altar of the Confession while the Litany of the Saints was chanted in Latin. The ceremony continued with a Liturgy of the Word, including a Gospel reading from John 17:24-26 and finished with Salve Regina, a Marian hymn.

Pope Francis' funeral details

The funeral will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10 AM in St. Peter’s Square by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the Dean of the College of Cardinals. A great number of Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, and many more will join the Mass.

After the funeral, Pope Francis' body will be taken into St. Peter’s Basilica, and then to the Basilica of St. Mary Major (as Pope Francis' wish), for burial.
