In his final hours, Pope Francis expressed deep gratitude to those who cared for him during his illness, particularly his personal health assistant, Massimiliano Strappetti. Strappetti had been by the Pope's side throughout his 38-day hospitalization at the Gemelli Polyclinic and during his convalescence at the Casa Santa Marta. On Easter Sunday, April 20, the Pope made a surprise appearance in St. Peter's Square, riding in the Popemobile to greet the faithful. This gesture was a heartfelt farewell to the people he had always cherished. Among his last words were, "Thank you for bringing me back to the Square," highlighting his enduring connection to the faithful.

The day before his passing, Pope Francis followed his usual routine: he rested in the afternoon and had a peaceful dinner. Early Monday morning, around 5:30 AM, he began to experience symptoms indicating a decline in his health. Despite immediate medical attention, his condition worsened rapidly. After bidding farewell to Strappetti, he fell into a coma and passed away shortly thereafter. According to Vatican sources, his death was swift and without suffering.

This unexpected outing was a testament to his dedication to the faithful and his desire to be among them one last time. Despite initial concerns about his ability to make the appearance, he was reassured by Strappetti and proceeded with the event. His presence brought immense joy to those in attendance and served as a poignant farewell.

Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis was known for his humility, compassion, and commitment to social justice. His final actions reflected these values, emphasizing his connection to the people and his desire to serve until the end. The Vatican has announced that his funeral will take place on Saturday, April 26, with numerous world leaders expected to attend.

Pope Francis honored with humble funeral and Novendiali prayers, leaving a lasting legacy of mercy and inclusion

The Pope's decision to have a simple funeral aligns with his lifelong commitment to humility and simplicity. He will be buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, fulfilling his wish for a modest final resting place. The Vatican has initiated the "Novendiali," a nine-day period of mourning and prayer, in honor of the late pontiff. During this time, the faithful are encouraged to reflect on his teachings and legacy.

As the Catholic community mourns the loss of Pope Francis, his role in the Church and global affairs recognized as significant by many. The upcoming conclave will elect his successor, who will be tasked with continuing his mission and addressing the challenges facing the Church today.
