Jet Set nightclub roof collapsed in Santo Domingo
At least 113 people have died after the roof of a nightclub in Santo Domingo collapsed early Tuesday, according to police in the Dominican Republic. The incident occurred during a performance by merengue singer Rubby Perez, according to local media.
The cause of the roof collapsed at the Jet Set nightclub, a popular venue in the National District, remains unclear.
A total of 121 individuals were transported by ambulance to various hospitals, and rescue operations are still ongoing, Juan Manuel Mendez, the country’s director of emergency management operations, said in an Instagram update around 8 a.m. The number of hospitalized individuals could be higher as multiple people are often transported at once.
"We are still working, searching for people in the debris. We believe many of them are still alive, and that’s why the authorities and their teams will not stop until we find the last person," Mendez said in a video posted by the Dominican Republic National Police on Instagram.

Dominican authorities expressed condolences to the victims of the Jet Set
Santo Domingo Mayor Carolina Mejía de Garrigó expressed her condolences on X, saying, "Our city wakes up to a terrible tragedy at the Jet Set nightclub. My deepest sympathy goes out to the families still waiting for news of their loved ones."
She also mentioned that the city’s national disaster response team is active.
President Luis Abinader of the Dominican Republic visited the scene on Tuesday morning and emphasized that the primary goal was "to save lives."
"We have been monitoring the situation minute by minute to ensure all government resources are being used. We have a long way to go, but we have faith in God that we’ll save more lives," he said in a video shared by the police.
According to Dominican News, the singer Rubby Perez was located and is in stable condition, his manager, Evelio Herrera, confirmed in an Instagram post.
"Let’s continue praying that more people are found alive," Herrera added.
However, her daughter confirmed his passed away to Dominican news, after hours of uncertainty and efforts to locate him.
