Harvard University has firmly rejected a series of demands from the Trump administration, which warned the prestigious institution of potential funding cuts unless it complied.

The administration's demands were largely focused on combating antisemitism on campus but included controversial conditions that Harvard deemed a direct attack on its academic independence and constitutional rights.

Trump's administration demands to Harvard University

According to an official statement issued Monday by Harvard University, Trump's administration send a list of updated demands, including but not limited to:

  • Requirement to audit student viewpoints - To address concerns about antisemitism.
  • Restriction of international students - Specifically targeting those perceived as "hostile" to American values.
  • Audit of campus programs - Focused on programs that the administration believes contribute to "ideological capture."

President Alan M. Garber firmly opposed the demands and in an email he sent to the university community stated, "The university will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights."

Trump's administration demands don't care about fighting antisemitism

While fighting antisemitism is a priority for Harvard University, Garber asserts that the list of demand are not focused on cooperation, but rather controlling "intellectual conditions" at Harvard.

He further criticized the list of demands, saying that the administration was more focused on controlling the university’s academic environment, effectively combating discrimination.
